First Grade’s Amazing Human Body Investigation

by Susan Owen, First Grade Teacher
Mrs. Lisa Peck, Director of The Center for Medical Sciences in Shorecrest's Upper School, is a favorite first grade guest expert during their in-depth investigation of the human body.

On her first visit she brought a real human skeleton to first grade. What a great way to learn all about that important framework of the human body.

Last week she dissected sheep brains to help the young scientists learn all about the very important organ that makes us who we are… the brain! They learned that the brain is the “boss” of the body as it controls every other part. It was amazing to be able to see and learn about all the different parts of the brain and to be able to touch them. The brain grows the most during the first 10 years of life so our first graders know that it is important to learn as much as we can now to s-t-r-e-t-c-h their brains! Did you know that making mistakes is one of the best ways your brain learns and grows? That’s good news!

Mrs. Peck also dissected sheep eyes with the first graders to help them learn how the eye and brain work together for our amazing sense of sight.

Mrs. Peck will be back to visit again soon for a dissection and study of the heart.
