Mesopotamian City-States on Minecraft in Sixth Grade

by Raffi Darrow, Ebytes Editor
After studying Ancient Mesopotamia in Social Studies, Shorecrest sixth graders built a scaled model of a city-state in Minecraft. The students spent two weeks planning, designing and building their cities.

They brainstormed structures found in a city-state, and then students selected their top 3 structures to build. Each student was assigned a structure to research, draw and label. As a group, students laid out their structure drawings on a large sheet of graph paper to create a blueprint plan of a city-state.

Following a MinecraftEDU tutorial from Dr. Baralt, Shorecrest's Director of Educational Technology, each student rebuilt the structure they sketched in 3D form and completed an associated writing assignment. They presented their completed cross-curricular projects to students and teachers in Lower School.

The interdisciplinary Minecraft project was presented by Amy Cobb, Suzanne Wells and Anna Baralt at the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) Conference in Philadelphia last year.
